There are numbers of factors and public insights of why we are close enough (whatever outcome would be) to WWIII.
In history, numerous times, we could find war triggers in land annexation or power shift.
This last element is even more pronounced nowadays, when some countries like USA observe its economical power weakening, in comparison to rapidly developing countries. Economy for ages dictated series of wars which suppose to 'balance out' falling vs. raising economies.
Today, we have same story, but with one major difference. So far USA is considered biggest military power. It is hard to say, if other countries have hidden potential bigger than American one, but surely fact that some can also be in alliance against chosen entity, makes things more complex in case of global conflict.
There is no hesitation from American side to lead towards conflict on global scale as economy, once thriving, is going into shadows.
Since 2001 and even earlier than that, we all faced war game, which can last indefinitely and it is called: "war on terror".
Consequently, this can lead in any given time to escalation of military actions anywhere in the world, especially in locations of local conflicts. And just now, quite few of them are unfolding.
There is also few other factors which lead to WWIII. Growing concern of overpopulated planet and scarce resources. Although politicians want us to believe, we live on the planet which can not sustain to feed all of us, contrary is actually a case. Earth has plentiful resources, no matter what population number exists, but the WAY we manage to use these resources take us to very dangerous place. As we consequently excavate loads of heavy earth minerals, drain oil reserves and use technologies which add extreme pollution (China is best example), we can expect sooner or later- planet 'payback time'. It is nowadays much sooner, as latest findings have proven, there is big methane gas escape into atmosphere which literally heats Earth and speed up process of polar ice melting.
With our extreme human immaturity and belief we destroy and cause so much damage through irreversible environmental acts that Earth, to recover, would have to take hundreds and thousands, if not millions years. And all of it happens in short range of time, since human population has appeared. Obviously for governing entities it is a signal for 'clean up solution' and this directly means: "global genocide".
We all can be righteously shocked to face such reality, but this reality is in making for many, many years. Previous wars have proven specific model of annihilation and with current technology this becomes much more easier and quick process.
So far we had food technologies implementing successfully this philosophy. For years, most of us are affected with diseases which used to happen rare or not at all. Children become allergic in very early age and majority of adults battle nowadays cancer or other serious illnesses.
Circle of life becomes spiral of slow death.
We don't have to die rapidly, although war can serve this purpose and takes care of it on bigger scale at once. America is a falling giant and knows it very well. Russia and ISIS, on other end, want supremacy in this global game. There is nothing else to loose. And usually by now - for humanity, wars are the only answers.
